![]() It was released by Harvest and EMI Records 2 October 1970 in the UK, and by Harvest and Capitol on 10 October 1970 in the US. VINYL LP - Atom Heart Mother is the fifth studio album by English progressive rock band Pink Floyd. The same thing happened with the US Q8 of Dark Side Of The Moon and that's why copies of the UK Q8 sold on ebay for hundreds of dollars, with one selling for nearly $1000 in the years before the quad mix was released on the Immersion box set.ATOM HEART MOTHER 2016 version. Even the best-of-the-best quad decoder, the Fostgate Tate 101A (which didn't come out until the late 70's), can only achieve about 25dB of front/rear separation which pales in comparison to a discrete quad 8-track tape. The problem was that the SQ decoders that existed circa 1973 were terrible - they were 'non-logic' units which only provided 2-3dB separation between front and rear channels, so the 'quad effect' is rendered almost negligible and what you hear is much more of a 'double stereo' effect. Rather than ask EMI UK for a discrete 4 channel tape, Capitol just decided to decode the SQ master they had and make quad 8-tracks from it. The US Q8 should be discrete, but it's not - I assume EMI UK only sent Capitol USA a SQ quad-encoded stereo tape to make their quad LP's. So the UK Q8 is the only place to hear the original discrete mix. ![]() US Quad 8-Track: 4 channel master -> SQ Encoder -> 2 channel SQ encoded sub-master -> SQ Decoder ->4 channel sub-master ->Quad 8-Track UK Quad 8-Track: 4 channel master -> Quad 8-Track US Quad LP: 4 channel master -> SQ Encoder -> Quad LP UK Quad LP: 4 channel master -> SQ Encoder -> Quad LP Click to expand. All of the releases use the same mix, it's just the lineage is different.
